Oude esoterische leringen zeggen dat iedereen een tweelingziel heeft en dat er zelfs na eeuwen en eeuwen van een moment komt dat ze samen komen, elkaar ontmoeten. Het is in een flits, een gelukzalig moment dat je beseft dat dit waar is, dat er iemand rondloopt op deze aarde die heel speciaal is. Niet speciaal omdat je samen kinderen hebt, een hobby deelt. Nee, je voelt dat er op een heel diep niveau een verbinding is tussen jou en de ander. Dat het voelt of dat je jezelf hebt teruggevonden in die ene. Je zit letterlijk op dezelfde golflengte. Je voelt je de zender waarop de ander heeft afgestemd of de radio die de boodschap van de ander, zijn of haar verlangens, humor, zorgen, interesses, gevoelens en gedachten feilloos ontvangt. Is dit mijn zielemaatje, is dit mijn tweelingziel? Dat kan, maar een romantische liefde hoeft niet noodzakelijk de Liefde voor en vooral: van altijd te zijn.

It throws light on the ways in which responsibilities were shared between city dwellers and the factors which influenced the allocation and reallocation of public services between the sixteenth and nineteenth centuries. The present study looks at those who provided various services to their communities, the ways in which they were rewarded and monitored, and the gain they may have sought. It focuses on the situation in the Low Countries, but in many respects, it also describes the development of the provision of public services in most towns in early modern Western Europe. The complex mixture of central and local, private and public, ecclesiastical and secular, individual and corporate initiatives, characterized — to a greater or lesser extent — urban communities everywhere in Western Europe. Above all, early modern towns were civil societies in which community services such as health care, poor relief, and public security were largely shaped and formed by conceptions of citizenship and collective interest.
